Breakfast at Zingerman’s Next Door Cafe

Since 1991, The Next Door Café has been abuzz every morning with a bounty of breakfast and beverage options that have earned us quite the collection of early bird regulars. If you’re off to a lecture or a morning meeting, we’ll get you on your way quickly with treats to tame hungry stomachs. If you’ve got a moment to enjoy the start of your day, we’ve got plenty of seating for people-watching a-plenty. Step inside and feast your eyes on the wall of freshly baked pastries and bagels from Zingerman’s Bakehouse, and our stunning menu board of beverages. Allow us to give you a virtual tour!

PASTRIESZingerman's Bakehouse Bagels on a baking sheet

Looking to satisfy your sweet tooth? Some items sell FAST—the cinnamon rolls and the ginger scones are fan faves—so the earlier you get here, the better luck you’ll have (and the better it will taste!). If you want your muffin or croissant warm, toss it in the microwave right next to the toasters—ten seconds should do the trick!

BAGELS

We have seven different varieties of bagels for you to choose from: Plain, Cinnamon Raisin, Everything, Roasted Garlic, Sesame, Poppyseed, and Salt. Order your bagel with the traditional Jewish fare of cream cheese, smoked salmon, and veggies, or something on the sweeter side with peanut butter and preserves (Cinnamon Raisin and Sesame fans swear by this combo). You will receive your bagel untoasted, ready for you to toast your bagel to your exact preference (or not!). Some folks only like their bagels to be a bit blonde, while others enjoy a nice heavy char, and we don’t want to dictate your bagel experience!

BREAKFAST BURRITOS

In addition to bagels, on weekends we also carry breakfast burritos! This is a bit of a secret menu item since we only sell them on Saturday and Sunday mornings and they tend to sell out fast! These breakfast burritos have soft, fluffy scrambled eggs, cheese, roasted veggies, and sausage in the non-vegetarian option. Ask for hot sauce on the side and savor this protein-packed start to your weekend.

Now that you’ve taken a gander at our sweet and savory treats, let’s explore the beverage menu board. We know it can be a lot to take in — the awesome staff at the Next Door is always here to help answer questions and offer suggestions.

COFFEE

For drip coffee, the setup is simple: we have a self-serve station with lots of sweeteners, milk, oat milk, and half n’ half. Much like the bagels, everybody’s preferences for their drip coffee are different when it comes to add-ins. Our drip coffee is our special Next Door blend, a medium roast with lovely caramel notes. For our caffeine-sensitive clientele, we will happily whip you up a decaf Americano, with or without room! If you’re buying beans to brew at home, check out our crash course on which pastries pair the best with each blend. Treat yourself to a Buenos Aires brownie with a cup of the Next Door Blend, or sip on our smooth espresso with a delicious ginger scone on the side.

ESPRESSO

Speaking of espresso, oh boy, do we have options. Lattes, cappuccinos, dirty chai, even affogato (after all, gelato for breakfast is a Sicilian tradition)! Our regulars will probably tell you to go with our Dirty Sheed, which is easily our most popular drink, especially in the warmer months: a double shot of espresso with a healthy dose of our housemade vanilla syrup, topped with lots of ice and a splash of cream. When it’s chilly outside, lots of folks go for our Hot Ginger Lemon: a warming and soothing beverage, made with our housemade ginger syrup and a squeeze of fresh lemon. No caffeine, but so delicious that you won’t even be thinking about it.

TEA

If coffee isn’t your cup of tea… we’ve got tea! And lots of it. Check out our magical menu board for all our flavors: black, oolong, pu’erh, green, white, herbal, you name it. Or opt for a tea lattes—we make three!—matcha, chai (made with our lightly sweetened housemade blend that we source from Rishi and brew here in-house for the freshest flavor), and Lady Grey (an Earl Grey tea latte with vanilla). The latter is sometimes called a London Fog; our name is a spin on the name of the tea. If you’re curious about brewing your own tea at home, we have a wide selection available for sale!

HOT COCOA

No discussion of the Next Door Café would be complete without mention of our hot cocoa menu. Nurture your inner child and treat them to something extra special. Aside from our own Zingerman’s Hot Cocoa (less thick and less rich than the drinking chocolates on our menu — kids and adults alike will love it) and the Rusticocoa (a recipe inspired by a chocolate bar made just for us by our friends at Askinosie Chocolate! Treat yourself to a rich and frothy single-origin drinking chocolate, finished with a sprinkle of vanilla bean butter.), we get our cocoa blends from Chocolat Moderne. The Mayan Eyes Drinking Chocolate, featured in our Mayan Mocha and our Livin’ La Vida Mocha, makes for a dark and luxurious hot cocoa with a slight kick of heat from spices and chiles. It’s one of the tastiest ways to warm up. Top your sweet treat with a swirl of whipped cream or a Zingerman’s Candy Manufactory marshmallow—vanilla OR chocolate!
