Camp Bacon® Film Fest: The Power of Narrative

Featuring Southern Foodways Alliance director John T. Edge
Nationally acclaimed author and contributor for the New York Times and director of the Southern Foodways Alliance, an organization dedicated to preserving and exploring the histories of the American South. His recent publication, The Potlikker Papers: A Food History of the Modern South, is a collection of Southern cultural culinary experiences. O, The Oprah Magazine said his writing is “a panoramic mural of the South’s culinary heritage, illuminating the region’s troubled place at the American table and the unsung role of cooks in the quest for social justice.”

Spend an evening with John T. Edge. Enjoy great food from Zingerman’s Greyline including a build-your-own BLT bar and caramel-enrobed bacon popcorn. Then, experience great conversations about food. John T. will discuss the power of narrative and its effects through the lens of culture and food.

Just for Kids: Explore the World of ​Bacon

🥓 Camp Bacon is an annual event hosted across all the Zingerman’s Community of Businesses that celebrates the history, stories and love of BACON. We’re offering this JUST FOR KIDS tasting during the camp festivities to share some bacon love with a younger audience. You will learn to taste bacon like an expert as we work our way through the World of Bacon. We’ll tell you about some of our favorite bacon makers, learn about different types of bacon and talk about some of our favorite ways to enjoy it. Oh yeah, and we’ll eat some bacon!

We think kids ages 4-14 would most enjoy this tasting. The cost is $15 per child. Parents are welcome to attend at no charge and observe on the sidelines. All participants will receive a 20% off coupon to use after the tasting to eat and/or shop at the Deli. Hot diggity dog, it’s the Sundae Social! Featuring a Sundae bar & Hot Dog bar! You double-dog-dared us to host more of these events, so by popular demand, we’ve got four lined up for you save-the-dates! Our Next Door sweet treat experts will help you make a custom-designed sundae featuring gelato from Zingerman’s Creamery and fabulous toppings like house-made chocolate syrup, cookie crumbles from Zingerman’s Bakehouse, or peanut brittle from Zingerman’s Candy Manufactory. Our kids area and patio will be open and will have extra special fun activities to add to the party festivities. The fun will also include fun activities for kids of all ages. PLUS, relish the chance to deck out your dog with condiments such as: diced onions, dill relish, spicy mustard, The Brinery sauerkraut, crushed potato chips, bacon and more!

We are over-the-moon ecstatic to be hosting Cured at Pearl’s chef Steve McHugh, four-time James Beard Foundation finalist for our Camp Bacon breakfast at Greyline! Hailing from a small Wisconsin town, he eventually made his way to San Antonio, Texas, after some time in New Orleans. Along with his wife, Sylvia, McHugh opened Cured at Pearl in late 2013 in the historic Pearl district. Cured makes use of the purest regional ingredients, paired with organic methods and is built on a foundation of lovingly hand-crafted cured foods, from charcuterie to pickles.

Together with Zingerman’s Deli chef Rodger Bowser, we will bring you a powerhouse of a brunch sure to wow your bacon-lovin’ soul! Your ticket will include coffee and orange juice because let’s face it, what is brunch without ‘em? And, you’ll have the option to order a signature Cured cocktail from our full bar, which sure sounds like a cure to us! Family Food Tasting: Explore the World of Chocolate

We’ve tasted chocolate with KIDS before, but this time, we’re inviting the grown ups to the table as well! In this Family Food Tasting, we’ll lead your whole family through the world of chocolate – introducing you to some of our favorite chocolate makers and describing how different types of chocolate are made, and teaching you how to taste like an expert. And the best part is, we’re going to taste some chocolate!

We think families with kids ages 2-12 would most enjoy this tasting. The cost is $10 per taster (kids and parents). Just for Younger Kids Story Time & Tasting: Sandwiches!

🥪 It’s never too soon to start honing your expert palate, so join us for this JUST FOR YOUNGER KIDS tasting event where we’ll read a story and learn to taste like an expert! In this event, we’ll be reading Hannah’s Tall Order: An A to Z Sandwich by Wisconsin Author Linda Vander Heyden and published by our local Sleeping Bear Press. And we’ll try a few of the Deli’s favorite sandwich ingredients. The best part for us is that we’ll be teaching your kids to taste the food like an expert – using the 5 steps to tasting great food.

We think kids ages 2-5 would most enjoy this event. Parents attend free. The story and tasting will last about 30 minutes and then participants are welcome to stay in the reserved room for lunch. We will have an order taker on hand, so no need to schlep the tots all around the Deli. All participants will receive a 20% off coupon to use after the tasting for lunch and/or shopping at the Deli. A homecoming event for the ages! For one night only, Chef and Zingerman’s Deli alumna, Abra Berens will be back at her old stomping grounds for a dinner to celebrate her freshly-authored tome, Ruffage: A Practical Guide to Vegetables. Back together again in the kitchen, she’ll be joined by Deli Managing Partner Chef Rodger Bowser, for an evening to harken back to old-school Deli Days. We’re so excited to hear stories of her culinary journey and dine on dishes pulled straight from the cookbook, which just hit The New York Times’ 12 Best Cookbooks of Spring 2019! If there are two things that we’ve learned from the kids at our tastings … it’s that kids have sophisticated palates and that they also really, really like sweet things! We’d like to expand their palates beyond the sugary goodness of cake and candy and Explore the World of Tea and Honey with them in this JUST FOR KIDS tasting!! We’ll taste several different types of tea and talk about what makes our tea selection different and special. We’ll also talk about why we carry over 50 different types of honey on our shelves. Oh yeah, and we’ll taste them all too!

Just because you are a kid doesn’t mean that you have to eat plain, ol’ soft white bread (although we like that too!) Come to this class that is JUST FOR KIDS and we’ll Explore the World of Toast and Jam. Real artisan bakers from Zingerman’s Bakehouse craft sourdough, rye, and other breads using traditional methods and flavorful ingredients. We’ll taste a few of our favorites that we think make great toast. And we’ll slather each slice with our favorite jams, telling stories of our favorite jam makers, and maybe trying some interesting types you may not have heard of before.
