Meet the Deli Detail: Scott Geisler

We’re introducing you to our passionate team of experts. Today’s featured Deli crew member is Scott Geisler, Front of House Manager

Our staff bring a tremendous amount of diversity and life experience to our team, and Scott is no exception! Scott Geisler comes to us via the East Coast and Chicago and with a vast experience in education and also the food and beverage industry. He even owned his very own hamburger shop in New Jersey! He says his favorite part of working at the Deli is witnessing the guests’ delight in the Zingerman’s Experience every single day. “When guests tell me, upon entering the restaurant, how excited they are to eat our food, and then when they make it a point to find me so they can express how much they enjoyed our food – especially my recommended sandwich, soup, salad and/or side – that just thrills me to no end.”

THE ROAD TO A2

Scott comes to us most recently from Bloomfield Hills and is a relatively new resident of Tree Town, moving to Ann Arbor in 2022! His two teenage kids enjoy the city a lot, which was a major factor in his decision to move here. Scott grew up a tad father away, 40 miles south of Boston in a rural town called Lakeville. Despite its name, it has no lakes, but it does boast the biggest pond in the state: Assawompset Pond is more than 4 miles across, but since you can see the bottom even at its deepest point, it is categorized as a pond!

Scott went to school for history and teaching, graduating from Trinity College in Hartford CT with a degree in history, and later earning his masters in elementary education from National Louis University in Chicago in 2020. Scott taught middle school history in Detroit, and guest taught in dozens of schools over the past 5 or 6 years. He continues to guest teach here in Ann Arbor when the opportunity arises!

Scott owned and operated his own burger joint, Scotty G’s Burgers, Fries & Shakes in Clinton NJ for a couple of years and prior to that professional plunge, he worked in the alcoholic beverage industry as a global and US marketer on brands such as Captain Morgan, Ketel One, Jose Cuervo, Smirnoff, and Johnnie Walker! This job took him all over the globe, and he has visited every state in the country save for North Dakota in his 25 years of marketing experience. In 2016, he won the Hunterdon County (NJ) Chili Contest, beating over 100 contestants with his recipe.

AT HOME AND WORK

Scott Geisler has worked with us since 2022 and says that he is “enjoying the ride, building terrific relationships and learning a ton!” Our guests most appreciate his friendly demeanor and excellent service, and of course, his sandwich recommendations! We appreciate Scott for being responsible and accountable in his work, ever conscientious and collaborate in taking the lead on getting things done–from small, but important tasks on shift, to taking the lead on launching a brand new soda vendor for the Deli and Next Door Café.

Outside of work, Scott enjoys reading, biking, golfing, and cooking–especially for his kids. Their favorites include risotto, etoufee and gumbo, French onion soup, bahn mi, and just about any sort of stir fry. And, of course, Scott’s chili! His pantry is full of spices, olive oils and vinegars, arborio and jasmine rice, Zingerman’s coffee beans, rustic pastas, and Zingerman’s Bakehouse Chocolate Cherry Sourdough Bread.

5 FUN FACTS

  1. Scott wants you to know he makes the best burgers you’ll ever taste. His special technique is to mix ground beef with different types of sausage, and to accentuate their flavors with his own spice blends and sauces.
  2. Scott’s dream is to open another burger joint in Ann Arbor!
  3. His favorite food-related memory is dining on duck a l’orange at a Michelin star establishment with his mom in Paris, on Christmas Eve 2001.
  4. His dream deli meal is the #00 D-$’s Cuban Conundrum and a ZCobb Salad.
  5. If he were to create a Deli sandwich, it would be named “Scotty G’s Mexicana Miracle,” and be a take on a Mexican torta: Cuban pork, cheddar, avocado, chiles, and mayo on a grilled Paesano roll.
