SUMMARY:Scrappy Snack Chat: Flavorful Ways to Fight Food Waste
DESCRIPTION:This event will take place IN PERSON at Zingerman’s Greyline!\nIn celebration of the City of Ann Arbor’s 4th Annual A2Zero Week and in collaboration with ZeroWaste.Org and their food waste challenge\, we are pleased to invite you to join us at Zingerman’s Greyline for a Scrappy Snack Chat. Together with our Deli Events team\, ZeroWaste.Org\, and local author Lindsay-Jean Hard\, author of Cooking with Scraps\, you’ll find out how to make the most of your groceries while making a positive impact on the planet. \nFans of Zingerman’s know our organization has a triple bottom line (Great Food\, Great Finance\, and Great Service). Lindsay-Jean likes to say that fighting food waste has a triple bottom line too—cooking with scraps is good for your palate\, the planet\, and your pocketbook! It is estimated that over 92 billion pounds of food are wasted every year in the United States\, with the average household wasting around 35% of their food. That means every single one of us can be part of the solution! Learn strategies for storing food properly to maximize its shelf life\, tasty tips and tricks for using commonly underutilized produce parts and other edible odds and ends\, and why it’s so important to keep food waste out of landfills anyway.  \nIn addition to the conversation\, we’ll have a buffet featuring snacks and a mocktail made with kitchen scraps! (Joining the movement to stop wasting food has never tasted so good!) Cash bar available for beer\, wine\, and cocktails. \nOur event panelists: \nLindsay-Jean Hard – Writer\, Author\, and Content Creator at Zingerman’s\n \nLindsay-Jean’s lifelong passion for sustainability has turned into a focus on reducing food waste (thanks to her influence Zingerman’s Bakehouse now uses whole bananas—peels and all!—in their banana bread). She is the IACP award-nominated author of Cooking with Scraps\, co-author of Zingerman’s Bakehouse Celebrate Every Day\, and contributing author to IKEA Canada’s The Scraps Book: A Waste-Less Cookbook. A former Food52 editor\, Lindsay-Jean has appeared on The Food Network and been featured in the New York Times\, Washington Post\, TASTE\, The Splendid Table\, and more.\n \nSamuel McMullen – Executive Director at ZeroWaste.Org\n \nSam and his sister Lydia took a “zero waste” pledge in 2015\, mostly out of sibling rivalry. Almost a decade later\, he’s the Executive Director of ZeroWaste.Org\, living a zero waste lifestyle and helping to educate people\, organizations\, and cities about zero waste and build solutions to common challenges. Sam’s background is in website design and development as well as restaurant and nonprofit marketing. Sam worked for a restaurant group in NYC called The Grey Dog\, where he worked as a busser\, server\, and ultimately becoming their head of sustainability and Chief Marketing Officer. \nTessie Ives-Wilson – Event Coordinator at Zingerman’s Delicatessen \nTessie has been with Zingerman’s since 2006. She’s worked throughout the Community of Businesses\, from Mail Order to the Delicatessen to the Creamery\, where she received the American Cheese Society’s prestigious Certified Cheese Professionals® certification. Now back at the Deli\, Tessie heads up tasting and events\, where she delights in making the foods the Deli carries more accessible for guests. (In fact\, she earned the nickname “Enabler-in-Chief” for her ability to help guests envision themselves using select ingredients or cooking techniques in their own kitchens.) \nYOUR $25 EVENT TICKET INCLUDES:\n\nA scrappy snack buffet featuring fromage fort\, salmon cream cheese\, bagel chips and banana bread.\nA scrappy mocktail (including in your ticket price) PLUS a cash bar for beer\, wine and cocktails.\nTasty knowledge and delicious conversation with Lindsay-Jean\, Samuel and Tessie.\nA 20% off coupon to use to shop our Specialty Foods grocery area after the tasting\n\nPlease note: This menu will have gluten and dairy. The only modification we can make to the menu is to provide gluten free bread in lieu of the bagel chips. We are unable to substitute the cheese or banana bread. \nLOGISTICS:\n\nDoors open at 6:15pm\, the panel will start at 6:45pm with plenty of time for questions!\nPlease include any allergy or other dietary needs in the field provided\nIf you have any questions\, please email delievents@zingermans.com

SUMMARY:Meet the Maker: Oro di Milas Olive Oil
DESCRIPTION:This event will take place IN PERSON at Zingerman’s Delicatessen!\nWe’ve traveled the globe looking for handmade\, artisan foods and we’ve found another great one for you: Oro di Milas Extra Virgin Olive Oil from Turkey!  After years of living in the United States\, the dynamic duo of Emine and Mark Colin\, left a thriving endodontic practice and returned to Emine’s country of birth. Together the couple bought a property with withering olive trees and coaxed them back to life. Over a decade later they are producing a top-notch olive oil that we have fallen head over heels for. We are really excited that Emine and Mark are going to join us IN PERSON for a tasting featuring their estate oil. We’ll talk all things oil – the process of growing\, pressing\, and bottling – and for sure we will taste their oil\, with a couple of simple dishes designed to show off the complex flavors of this stellar oil! \nIn a recent email newsletter\, Ari detailed all the ways he enjoys this oil: \nThe oil is terrific on pretty much everything from salad to steak. It’s a perfect addition to any freshly cooked fish or seafood—add it when the fish is already cooked and on the plate en route to the table. As per Turkish tradition\, it’s especially great with vegetables\, and also\, I’ll add\, with lamb! I like it on toast with some great varietal honey—the Appalachian monofloral honeys I wrote about last month would be marvelous. Great on fruit as well. Gently sauté some heirloom apples or pears in the oil\, sprinkle with a pinch of sea salt (and if you like things sweeter\, add a small bit of sugar and/or some high-quality raisins). When you’re ready to serve\, drizzle on a little more of the Oro di Milas. This simple dish would be delicious for dessert atop some Creamery gelato\, as a palate cleanser\, served as a sweet side dish with a savory main course\, or added to a grilled cheese. \nPlease note: this menu will have gluten and dairy. Adjustments can be made for both. \nYOUR $30 EVENT TICKET INCLUDES:\n\nA wealth of information and an evening of great conversation with Deli Events Coordinator Tessie Ives-Wilson and Oro di Milas founders Emine and Mark Colin\nA guided tasting of Oro di Milas olive oil\, featured in 3-4 small plates and of the oil on it’s own with plenty of bread for dipping.\nA 20% off coupon to use to shop our Specialty Foods grocery area after the tasting\n\nLOGISTICS:\n\nPlease include any allergy or other dietary needs in the field provided\nIf you have any questions\, please email delievents@zingermans.com

SUMMARY:Hog Heaven: An Exploration of Cured Hams
DESCRIPTION:This event will take place IN PERSON at Zingerman’s Delicatessen!\nEver since restrictions were relaxed on importing Eurpoe’s legendary cured hams\, Zingerman’s Delicatessen has been a destination for the lost art of carving Jamon. Between our “ham chandelier” and the knobby legs adorning the top of the meat case\, the bone-in hams at the Deli are among our most recognizable ephemera. Join two of our most affable meat mongers\, Chad and Connor\, who are particularly excited about our rotating selection and are frequently found discussing the ins and outs of what makes these hams so precious. You’ll bear witness to the Deli’s bone-in ham program and watch as Chad and Connor carve ham fresh off of the bone–including the legendary Iberico de Bellota and a very special rare Amercian country ham. During our hour plus of pork-intensive programming and cordial conversation\, you will taste plenty of cured ham. Come get up close and personal with our staff and explore a proverbial look behind the counter! We think this is an excellent treat for your favorite Father’s Day\, or for anyone who enjoys a celebration of the porcine persuasion. \nPlease note: This event includes pork and gluten. Can be made gluten-free on request. \nYOUR $30 EVENT TICKET INCLUDES:\n\nAn appetizer-level amount of cured ham and accoutrements.\nAn evening of live\, hand-sliced hams and candid discussion with our Deli meat mongers Chad and Connor.\nA 20% off coupon to use at the Deli or on our online at shop.zingermansdeli.com after the tasting\n\nLOGISTICS:\n\nPlease include any allergy or other dietary needs in the field provided\nIf you have any questions\, please email delievents@zingermans.com
