The Zingerman's Chocolate Story
At Zingerman's, you will find one of the best selections of chocolates
and confections in the Midwest, the U.S., the world! Our chocolate
specialists travel the world in search of the best of the best. Recent
stops on our sweet quest have been Turino, Italy; the Dominican
Republic; Cologne, Germany; and Chicago, Illinois!
We look for chocolates made by passionate chocolate-makers who work with
small batches of premium cacao beans, usually buying them direct from cacao farmers. These chocolatiers know their beans: they roast, grind and blend them expertly, using ingredients like real vanilla, cane sugar, and cocoa butter to bring out the best flavors and aromas.
Like great wine, cheese, and oils, great chocolate should be complex
with a long, pleasing finish. It's aromas and flavors may be as varied
as mushrooms and dried cherries, green olives and licorice, or caramel
and raisins! What do you taste?
Does chocolate really grow on trees?
Chocolate is made from the seeds of a tropical fruit, called cacao. This fruit (about the size of a football) grows on a tree and is harvested year-round on cacao plantations. The seeds of the fruit are scooped out, fermented, then dried in the sun. From there, they ship all over the world to chocolate factories, where they are transformed from bean to bar!
Scharffen Berger: Berkeley, CA
Specializes in expertly-blended mixed-origin bars. Scharffen Berger's bittersweet bar has hints of licorice, dried cherries, and raisins and makes an AMAZING batch of brownies.
Vosges Haut-Chocolat: Chicago, IL
Inspired by her own travels and encounters with the foods and cultures of the world, owner and chocolatier Katrina Markoff uses rare flowers, fruits and spices to flavor her world-famous exotic chocolate bars, caramels and couture cocoas. Try a taste of Vosges'
Red Fire Bar and treat yourself to a sweet-spicy experience.

Zzang! Original Candy Bar
Zingerman's hand-made miracle is changing the way people think about the American candy bar. A generous scoop of Spanish peanuts, fluffy peanut butter — honey nougat, and rich caramel dipped in dark chocolate... our best selling chocolate bar!
Zingerman's Mexican Chocolate
Direct from "Seasons of My Heart" in Oaxaca, MX, this chocolate is ground and shaped by hand from roasted cacao beans, Ceylon cinnamon, and sugar. Its sandy mouthfeel and chocolatey, smoky flavor make it great for snacking, but we like it best as a hot chocolate. We've even included a recipe on the bag!
Truffles and Confections
As beautiful as they are delicious, our truffles and confections come from all over the world: Grocer's Daughter truffles, hand-made with organic herbs from the chocolatier's Michigan garden; pâté de fruit from Charles Chocolates of San Francisco; pistachio and hazelnut pralinés from Chocolat Moderne of NYC; chocolate caramel mushrooms from Cluizel of France; raw-almond marzipan cookies from Puglia, Italy... Build a custom truffle collection for someone special or treat yourself to a truffle and a cup of tea at Zingerman's Next Door!
Candy Corner
In addition to being chocolate-hounds, we are working really hard to track down the best, full-flavored, traditionally-made candies in the world for you. So far, we've found RJ's Licorice, Seitenbacher Gummis (try the cherry dolphins!), organic lollipops from Yummy Earth, herbal candies from Sweet Botanicals, grey sea salt caramels from Fran's... and more. These are great treats for the young and the young at heart!
